Jack and His Doss Lute, in Portrait

The young satyr, like most of his kind, moves gracefully and fleetly upon cloven hooves. Curving horns emerge from shaggy, auburn hair, while fair skin kissed by the sun peeks through chestnut fur. A disarming smile plays easily upon his handsome face, a jutting, sculpted beard emphasizing his strong jaw and high cheekbones. The satyr carries a rapier at his belt, but his hand strays more often to the beautiful lute slung across his back—a pear-shaped instrument of alder engraved with ornate depictions of a forest teeming with wildlife. Uncannily, the images upon the lute appear different at each glance, as if the creatures etched into the alder come and go as they please. Rough, well-worn leathers drape his lean form, and from his neck dangles a charm of polished bone carved with an elaborate but unreadable rune.
