The Vehicles Collection:
Descriptions of vehicles and mounts for land, sea, air, and space travel.
Spacefaring Vessel Powers Up
A great glittering cloud of magic—so powerful and concentrated as to be visible—billows around the body of the ship. The sails flare out, their canvas stretching like a bird’s wings before flight. The crew instinctively grabs for the nearest source of support: ropes, railings, rigging, each other. An exuberant, rasping voice calls out: “To the sea of stars!” Then, with a reverberating hum that can be both heard and felt, the brass-lined bow of the ship surges forward into the astral tapestry.
Chariot
Two large, spoked wheels are all that support the chariot. The entire vehicle is little more than a thin platform with a waist-high guard at the front. Yet what is there is extravagant, with masterful reliefs and adornments covering every viable surface. They seem to tell the story of past riders and their deeds.
Carriage Pulled by Phantom Horses
The carriage is as black as the hour after midnight. It stands in the rain, silent on the wet cobbles of the street. The seats are buttoned and stuffed, and a violet silk canopy stretches over the cabin. Instantly, in a snap of harness and linkage, the carriage shaft lifts from the ground. It lurches forward on its large wooden wheels and picks up speed. You hear the hard clop of many hooves, yet see no horses.
Derelict Noble’s Yacht
The ship creaks sadly as it bobs in the briny turquoise waters of the cove. Peeling gold veneer, half-drunk bottles of expensive wine, and rotting, threadbare silks hint at the luxury once enjoyed on this now-derelict vessel. Sparrowhawk stretches across the ship’s stern in faded ornate script—clearly the work of a master calligrapher.
Carriage
The carriage rests atop four broad wheels, with spokes dirty from travel and tires chipped and scraped from the road. The rest of the carriage is in much better shape. While you can spot some marks of wear, they don’t detract from the artfully inlaid patterns on the door and body of the transport.
Skyship
A hull of polished cherrywood hovers proudly above the sky dock, the canvas bellies of the ship’s sails swelling with the wind. You hear the creak and clang of its complex internal mechanisms, and members of the crew shout to one another, heartily recounting their latest voyage.
Warship
Too massive to dock, the ship waits anchored in the bay. It sits broadside to the shore, displaying its strength with cannons designed to break other ships and crenellated rails for stabilizing firearms. Its reinforced hull is heavy, so the masts are fitted with extra sails, webbed with complicated rigging. The sigils and flags that adorn it are of nation and legacy—the hold and cabins sparse and efficient. It is a vessel of singular purpose: to win a fight.
Apparatus of the Crab
The massive iron construct most closely resembles a leviathan decapod. It holds itself aloft on six multi-jointed steel legs, with a pair of bladed claws extending outward from its front, flanking a large iron hatch which seemingly provides access to the machine’s innards and the controls therein. A pair of eyes, in truth periscopes to allow the crew inside to see their surroundings, perch on the head of the strange machine.
