The odor of this ramshackle shed tickles at your senses long before it comes into view. The shed has been expanded multiple times with additions of wooden planks and chicken wire. The sounds from within the animal shelter fluctuate between the low murmurs of cats and the occasional yip of a dog to a cacophony of snarls and hisses, chaotic and impossible to control. Behind the shelter, piles of offal and bones—delivered in the early morning by the local butcher—sit on stretched tarps for the abandoned animals’ single daily meal.
