Dressed in a leather tunic cut like a cassock, with studded leather sleeves visible beneath, the middle-aged man swipes his shoulder-length salt and pepper hair out of his eyes before drawing a hand crossbow from one of the leather bandoliers crossed over his hips. Sighting carefully, he fires a short quarrel into a nearby tree, then squints and frowns at the bolt’s placement. With a businesslike air, he pulls a set of iron pliers out of a long pocket cut into the leather tunic, and adjusts the sights of the crossbow with minute movements. After thirty seconds, he replaces the pliers in his pocket, loads, and fires the crossbow into the same tree, this time gauging his shot with a satisfied nod.
