The forest fans out and up behind the shrine, hemmed in by a dirt road on either side. It almost seems like the shrine rose up to protect the forest, forcing the road to split. You shake off this silly notion. The road leading up to the fork continues along one edge of the forest nearly as straight as an arrow. Still, there seems to be something unusual about the shadowed space beyond the bushes that crowd the forest’s fringe.
