Like a storm course of Valkyries, the introduction breaks into a kind of militaristic speech: a choir chanting quarter notes, timpani and bass in unison with them. Piano triplets stand atop the dark edifice of the lower register, and the strings climb up from shadow to be answered by them. The choir imposes, the timpani drums roll, and the piece ends in discord.
