Like a little mechanism, the piano plinks out a tattoo against the answer of strings—back and forth. Then the rhythm collapses to something more pensive, and back again to the dance of the keys in crisp eighth notes. A timpani roll breaks us out to a more legendary feel, driven by bass choral voices. Then the lock is picked, and the piano plays a linear resolution like a key being dropped neatly into a pocket.
