Simple call and response chants come from a dour group of singers and chamber strings playing in a low register. They build, imposing and kohl-eyed, to drums and the lament of a single violin over the bleak orchestra. The drums launch into a brisk run, but the strings and voices seem to catch up, silence them, and take the last word.
