Things don’t always go the way the listener wants them to. It could be a negotiation, a careful attempt at a puzzle, or just good old-fashioned socializing. The party can’t seem to get a win. They might get close, they might even think they’re about to get it right, but it’s for naught. They will fail, fail, and fail again. Sometimes success just isn’t in the cards.
