The grand hall lies dark and quiet under the moon, not one window alight with the flicker of candle or sconce, and the gate to the front courtyard has been shut, reinforced by a heavy beam. The laborers and attendants of the family stand in a group outside the gate, shoulders sagging from the day’s work. A mild cheer rises up from a handful of them as someone suggests a cold pint, and they begin to make their way down the road away from the fortress…
Lacking any signs of personnel or residents, the front courtyard of the hall is eerily silent. The stables, bereft of mounts even at this hour, house only the high whistle of the night breeze as it passes through the barren stalls. But wait—you hear a light clopping from beyond the second gate, the threshold that leads to the hall itself. These light, hoofed steps ramp into a hasty trot, then a crash of hooves upon cobblestones, and finally a high, laughing bleat. An abrupt snort stops this audible galivant short. After this, you hear nothing.
This summer, winter, and night map depicts the town of Harkenvale: an inviting collection of mostly cottages, general stores, and lodges flanked by Pilgrim Hill and the Harken Hall fortress. Visitors who stay more than one night would do well to start the day with a blessing from the Temple of the Stormcaller before rewarding their piety with a stop at Chakroun’s Coffee Cup. Once roused and ready to run errands, they may replace their socks at The Spare Cufflink and resupply at Bhavani’s Medical Center or Widow Mary’s Apothecary. Time permitting, visitors can take an afternoon nap by the Community Garden and Well before ending the day with refreshments at the Soaring Peak Vineyard.
