BowRilee and His Little Ladle
Looping a faded red apron over his head, the stocky, pale man hums a jaunty tune as he potters about the small galley kitchen, collecting ingredients and utensils from battered wooden cupboards nailed to the timber walls. His weathered skin is the pale yellow of sun-bleached bone, and his eyes—dark gray like the sea after a storm—shine with a comforting warmth as he lights a small stove, eager to ply his culinary trade. Holding a large wooden bowl in the crook of his brawny arm, the chef stirs vigorously, causing his tattoo to bend and flex like a reflection in a rippling pool. The dark, bold lines are striking against his pallid skin: a skull, cut at the top, forms a bowl filled with a hearty stew. Smiling wistfully, he pours the mixture from the bowl into a pot-bellied pan, adds a final dash of herbs, then settles into a comfortable rhythm in time with the gentle rocking of the ship, stirring the pot with a robust wooden ladle.
