Seated along the stage and facing the last chairs of the front row, a sign language interpreter is chatting with the Deaf theater-goers she was hired to assist. As the house lights go down, she pulls a piece of phosphorescent moss from her pocket, crushes it in her palm, and touches her chair, creating a soft, warm light enough to make her movements visible for interpreting the performance. A one-woman show, she mirrors the performers’ dramatic facial expressions accompanied with long, flowing gestures to convey every emotion felt by the actors.
