Celebratory hoots and hollers echo over the grassland from the large corral. The wide, wooden-ringed field has been partitioned into smaller arenas, some with natural grass and others with soft, sand-rich soil. The cheers increase as a race between two hares in one of the arenas reaches its climax, sending varied creature-spectators into either exhilaration or despair. A team of field mice and ground squirrels is setting up obstacles on an adjacent racecourse, presumably for the next event.
