An ominous string section plays half notes over long, sustained notes of a choir harmonizing. A piano plays a linear piece in a minor key. The next movement, heavy strings and a soft harpsichord precede the piano’s return. The rhythm is mechanical, a slow metronome, until the final, soft notes of a timpani.
