Wheels screech on the rails, sharp, sometimes in a piercing whine, as engines churn smoothly. Pistons and coupling rods clank and grind, smoke puffs, and occasionally the hard knock of a door or backfire booms out from the station. The trains come in—one clanking roughly in flaps of sheet metal—and the trains pull away.
