The viola plays a brisk but foreboding prelude before it is joined by bass and cello, optimistic violins, and the closure of a great bell. The leftward keys of a piano undergird a bittersweet string solo. Suddenly the timpani and chimes, along with voices and strings, rush back in to the theme, which plays along to a chanting choir that finally invokes the last bell.
