A hard two, the three absent, drives the bottom of the waltz into its melody line, an elegant duet of piano and violin. Like two lovers full of old sadness and new hope, they flirt across the table until others join in. More ominous, more cynical, the low piano notes, rolling drums, and insistence of the lower strings compete with the violin, now dancing alone. A carillon plays like a child at the banquet, the conversation drowns it out, and the piano finishes alone.
