The river is quiet this night, the dipping of the oars the loudest sound. Water laps against the boat’s sides and the banks, and a bird with a long, melancholy whistle calls across the river. Other birds join, tree trunks list and creak, but the heavy tropical night has as much sleep in it as it has noise.
