Pickaxes work hard at the rock while pulleys are geared to move raw ore. A wheelbarrow haphazardly makes its way over the uneven ground, coming from the distance, passing close by, and then moving away. The march of a guard patrol also passes, and soon the sound of whips reaches the listener’s ears—judgment being wrought upon the enslaved populace. A guard whistles and slaves in chains approach. Shovels make quick work of some nearby gravel.
