The hum of environmental controls keeps the listener company. The hiss of pneumatics can be heard, as well as the ramping up of powerful engines. A computerized voice indicates an incoming message—garbled and unable to be understood. Screens are activated and navigated through. A keyboard is typed on and the computerized voice acknowledges the activation of the ship’s autopilot; someone then tinkers on cockpit systems with an electric screwdriver. The ship’s autopilot and hyperdrive deactivate as the tinkerer drops their tools on a nearby tray and navigates through screens once more.
